Retracing My Steps
Returning to blogging, but in a different space.

A view west down Loch Leven near Glencoe, Scotland
The last piece I published on my blog went up nearly two semesters ago, in August of 2024, on Substack. I was returning to regular office life in Boston, continuing my dissertation research, and was excited to share a bit of it with the world. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned.
Beyond the state of the world and a very busy semester, my choice of platform has become an increasingly large issue. Substack—once perfect for me as someone who wanted an easy, low-design space to write for cheap—has come under increasing scrutiny in the last year for its platforming of conspiracy theories, bad history, and outright white nationalism. I posted about it back in January, and then began poking around alternatives.
After a busy semester and a lot of searching and experimenting with different platforms, I’m giving beehiiv a try. In design and concept it’s very similar to Bluesky, and I can expand my presence on it as I need to, depending on where my writing takes me.
I’ve imported all of my previous posts over here and done some minor corrections to make them fit the new platform, and I’ve imported my previous subscriber list as well. If you got this post in your email and no longer want to be recieve my writing, please click the Unsubscribe button below! If you’re new, and are looking forward to new writing on early medieval history, landscape, and the environment, please consider subscribing.
